Taglialatella Galleries presents Monsters, a solo exhibition by MOTOMICHI.
Japanese-born MOTOMICHI is a multi-disciplinary, award-winning immersive and projection mapping artist. He has long been fascinated by cryptozoology; his passion lies in the study and exploration of stories behind hidden or unknown animals and creatures that may be extinct or unconfirmed.
MOTOMICHI’s work involves reinterpreting these “monsters” of cultural intrigue and even inventing his own mythical creatures. Each of the artist’s monsters has an extensive backstory and personality. They can be playful, terrifying, charming, and even lonely or sad. MOTOMICHI’s monsters don’t necessarily “feel” like humans do, but their nuanced dispositions can serve as mirrors for our own attitudes towards life.
"Fear and nightmares have always been a source of imagination for me. I’ve long been drawn to mythical creatures, monsters, cryptozoological stories, and Yokai, which I see as visualized forms of our fears: images we create to face and live with. Using a limited three-color palette and bold, graphic forms, my work follows the principle of less is more, creating a simplicity that conveys complex emotions. It encompasses paintings, drawings, and outdoor projection mapping, ranging from works on paper and canvas to large-scale projections in public spaces." - MOTOMICHI
As a filmmaker, MOTOMICHI has screened his animations at the Sundance Film Festival, Pictoplasma, and the Holland International Film Festival, among others. His recent experimental film, Okami, won at the Leeds International Film Festival. MOTOMICHI’s works have been exhibited globally in numerous museums and galleries, including the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. The artist has also collaborated with MTA Design & Arts New York, Electronic Arts, MTV, USA Networks, and UNIQLO.
With Monsters, MOTOMICHI invites everyone to explore the drawings, paintings, and projected animations that bring to life creatures from the depths of the artist’s world. Please RSVP to attend the opening reception, which will take place on Thursday, October 23rd at 229 10th Avenue, New York, NY from 6-8 PM. Monsters will be open to the public daily, Mon-Sat, from 10-6 PM until November 15th.
